The StorageTek Linear Tape File system (LTFS), Library Edition can now be used with the low cost StorageTek SL150 Library which scales from 30-300 LTO5/6 slots. This software sits on Linux on an entry level 1U/2U x86 server and manages the flow of data to and from the tape. The server presents a CIFS interface and makes drag and dropping files to tape simple, ultra low cost and with very low energy bills. Perfect for long term archive storage without complexity.
Systems can range from two to eight LTO drives and the server connects to the library via fibre channel HBA. A simple twin drive LTO6HH system with Server, OS, HBA’s, cabling, redundant power, LTFS software, 3 Year Oracle Support and Synoptix installation can be deployed for as little as €33K. That is for a native 375TB capable system in 13RU, just add tapes as you grow.
Storing data on tape has never been so cost effective. Power consumption for the entire system, server and tape library will be between 300w-426w, that range is active idle to 100% workload so the average is going to be very much at the lower end of the scale.
